Innovation in Public Employment Programmes in the Metros

National Treasury’s Neighbourhood Development Partnership Programme opened a grant window for Public Employment Programmes (PEPs) in the metros. This emphasises the creation of meaningful forms of work that respond to community priorities, encouraging partnerships with non-state actors and co-funding from the private sector. Metros have been encouraged to innovate in the forms of work undertaken, to maximise the benefit for participants as well as the social, environmental and/or economic impact. Proposals from eight metros are being supported, with the work undertaken including urban agriculture, placemaking, support to homeless people, waste management solutions, catchment management and more.

(Data captured up until March 2025)

The Presidential Employment Stimulus consolidates data reported by participating departments. This data is subject to ongoing verification and audit by departments. The numbers reported may change based on final verification and audit outcomes. Where work opportunities straddle financial years, the audit process requires that they are reported in both years. For example, Teachers Assistants who start work in February and continue into the next financial year. To avoid ‘double counting’ of participants, this is corrected under ‘total opportunities’ reported. Note however that under the performance breakdown, the cumulative annual figures are presented.
